More about the Dove Series of Mosaic Crosses
I love the simple beauty in each Mosaic Dove Cross that I create. Watching the dove take shape and come to life, adding
extra touches to make each cross unique and filling in the background to offset the dove never grows old. I am always left
with a sense of awe, wonder and peace.
The dove is one of most commonly used Christian symbols both in ancient and modern ecclesiastical art and symbolizes several
different things:
Purity, innocence and peace. This symbolism derives largely from the Old Testament where the dove often was used
as an offering to God and, in the story of Noah’s Ark, when the dove sent out by Noah returned to the Ark with an olive
branch in its beak, representing God’s peace towards humanity. See Genesis 8:11
Baptism. The dove as the Holy Spirit appeared at Jesus’ baptism by John the Baptist. See Matthew 3:16; Mark
1:10; Luke 3:22; John 1:32. When used in connection with Baptism, the dove is often shown descending.
Holy Spirit. The dove is the only shape ever given to the Holy Spirit. It appeared at Jesus' baptism by John the
Baptist. See verses above. In all other accounts no shape is given.
Likewise, the dove also symbolizes the agent through which the Holy Spirit works on Earth. The dove also identifies the
Holy Spirit as a member of the Trinity.
The Christian Soul. The dove signifies also the Christian soul, not the human soul as such, but as indwelt by the
Holy Spirit; especially, therefore, as freed from the toils of the flesh and entered into rest and glory.
